This piece is a part of a series created in the 1980’s that was inspired by his love for jazz. Simpson saw music and art as inter-related. This series moved to a dynamic brush stroke and colors resonate through each painting.

Schawinsky was a painter and stage designer in Germany at the Bauhaus before he emigrated to North Carolina at the urging of Josef Albers. In 1933, Schawinsky became a teacher at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Three years later he decided to commit to painting full-time.
